Tailoring performance to each individual wearer, these true wireless earbuds take personalised audio to the next level

Ears are like snowflakes: no two are exactly the same. They’re shaped differently inside and out, which means we all hear sounds in different ways – so why are all headphones designed for a generic set of ears?

That’s not the case with Denon’s revolutionary PerL and PerL Pro earbuds. These true wireless headphones come with Masimo Adaptive Acoustic Technology (AAT) on board, a feature that enables them to quickly and easily personalise their sound performance to perfectly suit the individual user’s ears.

Other earbud makers promise personalisation, but the system typically measures only the shape of the ear canal and/or the fit of the bud. Masimo AAT goes deeper than that – quite literally, in fact. It works by playing a range of tones into the wearer’s ears and measuring the resulting otoacoustic emissions – the faint sounds that are produced when the tones are amplified and reflected in the inner ear rather than just the ear canal.

By measuring these emissions, AAT can analyse which frequencies your ears are more sensitive and less sensitive to. Then, the system feeds this info into its self-learning engine to build a unique hearing profile – and corresponding set of EQ settings – for your ears. The result? A listening experience that’s more nuanced and detailed, more engaging and stimulating.

PerLs of wisdom

The Denon PerL (RRP £189) makes Masimo AAT technology more accessible than ever. In addition to personalised sound, it – like all Denon products – has been built to meet the company’s exacting standards and sound philosophy. Tuned by the Denon Sound Master, these earbuds serve up a vivid, spacious sound that aims to faithfully reproduce the original recording.

They also have epic battery life: 6hrs of power on a full charge, and a charging case offering a further three full charges. That’s a full 24hrs of glorious-sounding music, podcasts or audiobooks in your trouser pocket.

The Denon PerL Pro (£299) kicks things up a few notches with added audio features in the form of aptX Lossless tech and Dirac Virtuo spatial sound (see panel below). It also offers extended battery life: 8hrs in the buds, 32 more in the case.

Something you’ll find in both the PerL and PerL Pro is adaptive active noise-cancellation. Vital for anyone who wants to shut out the outside world to focus on whatever they’re l
