Ocean motifs and sandy hues were the inspiration for a girl’s bedroom that is timeless and chic
When designing a child’s bedroom as part of a whole-house project, designer Amanda Barnes had to consider every aspect. ‘The requirements for a child’s space can be more exacting than for an adult’s,’ says Amanda.

1DESIGN THE LAYOUT
‘The bed was positioned with a window on either side of the headboard and another to the side, providing great early-morning views,’ says Amanda. ‘This configuration allowed for plenty of walkaround space as well as a reading and relaxing corner into which we fitted a hanging chair, lined with a sheepskin for added cosiness.’
2 CREATE A THEME
‘Because this is a young girl’s room, it needed to reflect that,’ says Amanda. ‘The owners wanted a space for their daughter that was cosy, playful and practical. To achieve that, we went for a coastal theme that was youthful without having the usual pinks, purples and all things princess. The fabric on the Roman blinds, viewed up close, looks like coral/seaweed. The fish on the walls, the soft blue upholstery on the bedding and the sandy coloured floors all pull from nature’s coastal palette.
3 THINK PRACTICALLY
‘While this room was designed for a young girl, the larger bed allows for sleepovers and accommodates more guests as needed,’ says Amanda. ‘Also, it’s nice for a parent to open their child’s bedroom door and see all the room without having to walk in – this l
