Clean lines dominate this space – from the crisp shape of the island and the long-legged bar chairs to the fluted timber cladding and the reeded glass wall cupboards.

WORK Arear extension with new kitchen

LOCATION North London

With plans prepared for an extension across the rear of their home, the owners asked designer Lucy Wilks to produce a new kitchen. ‘They wanted to create a large, open-plan space as the sociable hub of their home and fully geared to relaxed family life,’ explains Lucy.

1 DESIGNING THE VISION

‘The owners had a clear vision of the style of cabinetry they wanted, but had been unable to find a company able to make it,’ recalls Lucy. Several roads led to Herringbone, known for its bespoke kitchens and flexible approach. ‘At our meeting, I began sketching ideas for a double layered Shaker-style door, before our workshop made a sample for approval,’ she says. ‘The layering creates a subtle refinement, adding a linear detail that we chose to echo in the design of the rest of the room.’

2 MAKING A PLAN

‘The new “letterbox” window was the obvious place for the sink, so that there would be a view of greenery while washing up,’ explains Lucy, who designed it as part of a sweep of cabinetry along the wall. This run also includes built-in ovens and a breakfast pantry, complete with pocket doors designed to allow uninterrupted access during the morning rush. ‘In the centre of the room, a large island makes the heart of the space, complete with hob, prep and socialising space,’ she adds. At one end of the new room, a coffee station encourages family and friends to make drinks without getting in the way of the cook, while at the opposite end, a cooling wall includes fridge, freezer and wine fridge.

3 PICKING A PALETTE

To create the subtly sophisticated look the owners had in mind, the cabinetry is painted in a warm grey, balanced by sections of soft white and sand cast silver-coloured handles with a little texture. A touch of drama comes from the swirling veins of the natural marble island, complete with waterfall ends that sweep to the floor. The effect is offset by accents of timber richness from walnut cupboard interiors, chunky walnut shelves and a herringbone floor.
