Create a modern kitchen render

As a 3D artist specialising in architectural renders, I’d like to share the story and challenges behind the creation of this particular render. While browsing architectural websites and magazines, I stumbled upon a captivating project called KDW 199 House Extension by the Dutch firm CUBE Architecten. The design and harmony of this project deeply resonated with me, so I decided to recreate it, paying utmost respect to the original work.

Initially, I faced the challenge of modelling the project without access to the precise dimensions of the house. To overcome this obstacle, I meticulously examined every available image, utilising them as references to recreate all the objects within the scene. Starting with the kitchen, I modelled each interior component, working my way to the library. Among the interior elements, the most demanding part proved to be accurately representing the dining chairs.

Having completed the intricate interior modelling, I then proceeded to enhance the exterior part of the project by adding complementary elements. With the foundational work accomplished, I shifted my focus to setting up the camera and preparing the scene for optimal lighting. With my understanding of the pivotal role that lighting plays in creating a beautiful render, I devoted a considerable amount of time and effort to carefully selecting the most suitable setup.

01 UNIT SETUP AND MODELLING

The first thing I do at the start of every project in 3ds max is to change the system unit setup based on the scale of the project. For creating the chair, I used a poly modelling technique. To make the chair’s seat I created a plane and added a few segments to it. After turning it into an Editable Poly and selecting an edge, I used the Generate Topology option. You can access this option using the ribbon in the Modelling tab under the Polygon Modelling section. Finally, I selected all of the edges and gave them chamfers.

02 KITCHEN CABINET GENERATOR SCRIPT

For the cabinets in the kitchen, I used a powerful script called Kitchen Cabinet Generator. This allows me to create all kinds of cabinets and doors, and add details to them using Editable Poly. The first task was creating the base cabinets. To add details, I selected some edges and made chamfers. For the doors, I used the modern door in the script with no changes except using Editable Polys to tweak some of the d
