Helen Duckworth talks through curating a collection of projects that will set you apart from the crowd

A STRONG PORTFOLIO Helen’s work includes modelling Pigeon Toady and Nate in Storks, Smurf girls in Smurfs: The Lost Village, and hero character Eggs in The Boxtrolls

After nearing 20 years in the industry I’ve seen and created many showreels, and can provide you with some insight into what I’ve learned along the way, and what, in my opinion, are the key elements when creating one.

In the world of 3D modelling, your portfolio will serve as your professional calling card; a visual testament to your skills and capabilities. Whether you’re aspiring to enter the realms of stylised character modelling, game character modelling, or any other niche, a strong portfolio is your ticket to attracting potential clients and employers.

During this comprehensive tutorial, I’ll walk you through the process of creating a compelling modelling portfolio that tells your unique story and sets you apart in this competitive industry. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create an impressive portfolio.

01 DEFINE YOUR FOCUS

Before embarking on the creation of your reel, it’s essential to pinpoint the specific type of modelling you intend to showcase. This could be, for example, characters for video games, stylised characters, or another niche within the field.

Establishing this clear focus will enable you to fine-tune your portfolio to resonate with your intended audience. Take a moment to reflect on which industry aligns with your career aspirations, be it games, visual effects (VFX), or animated film.

And once you’ve determined your preferred industry, tailor your portfolio to that specific genre. For instance, if you’re aiming to create a Disney-style reel, consider crafting a diverse array of characters. This might encompass an elderly female character, a youthful boy, or even a stylised bird. By showcasing this range, you not only highlight your versatility, but also craft a portfolio that’s perfectly suited to your chosen genre.

02 CONTACT INFORMATION

Start your showreel with a slide that includes your name and contact details at the beginning. Recruiters don’t want to have to scroll to the end to get your email, and when they have so many to look through this would get old quick! Making their life easier will work in your favour.

Include your name, email address, phone number, and specialty, such as character or environment modeller.
