A cinema camera will give you the most control and the best image quality, and needn’t be much more of a financial investment than a DSLR

If you’ve been tempted to start a side hustle alongside your day-to-day work, be that an engaging YouTube channel or teaching in-depth courses through a third party site, it can be a bit of a headache figuring out exactly where to start. You’ll be wanting to set up an aesthetically pleasing studio space to host your video content and invest in decent kit to achieve the best results.

To help you figure out how to get started we’ve written a guide aimed at aspiring new content creators, breaking down what you’ll need to create attention-grabbing, insightful and well-produced material, including some expert advice from artists who have already found success in the field. They provide a look into how they got started, sharing what they’ve learned along the way, and offer their recommendations on the essentials that you’ll need to succeed.

It’s important to understand what’s driving you to start your side hustle. While the passive income may well be your end goal, the key to creating truly engaging content, and staying motivated to generate it in the first place, comes from within, as E.J. Hassenfratz, the creative director at School of Motion and the Eyedesyn YouTube channel, found when he started making tutorials. “If you’re only getting into creating content for the views or the likes, you’re going to be setting yourself up for disappointment,” he says.
