1915 THE BIRTH OF A NATION

The controversial silent film The Birth Of A Nation, directed by DW Griffith, marks the beginning of Hollywood’s Golden Age thanks to its advanced production techniques. However, it also includes racist depictions of African Americans and makes the KKK into heroes.

1927 THE JAZZ SINGER

The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson and Warner Oland becomes the first feature length film to have a synchronised vocal track as well as music. It sparks the popularity of movies with sound, and a couple of years later most Hollywood films are ‘talkies’.
