Favourite subjects

I love to hike, so waterfalls are one of my favourites. You need to hike to get to most waterfalls, and once there, the payoff is taking the perfectly composed shot, whether it means getting your feet wet or not. Waterfalls are beautiful and powerful, and are a true display of nature’s splendour.

How did you get into photography?

I started taking photos in high school, as it was an elective I could take in order to get enough credits to move on to the next grade. I enjoyed being creative with an old film camera and black & white film, processing shots in a darkroom then displaying them.

What do you love about photography?

The ability to allow your creative juices to flow. I don’t subscribe to any rules (i.e. rule of thirds), but I try to compose what I feel is pleasing to the eye. If other people like it too, that’s great, but it’s not who I’m taking photographs for. I also love that it causes me to travel to places I may never have normally gone to, like Iceland and Death Valley, for instance.

Current kit

Nikon D850, Nikon Z 7II.

Favourite lens

Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8.

Favourite accessory

Singh-Ray Lighter Brighter ND Polariser.

Dream purchase

Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S lens.

What software do you use for editing?

Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Nik Collection.

Where do you find inspiration?

In nature, but sometimes the city too. My inspiration comes from searching then planning for the shot. Where will I stay? What lens(es) will I use? Should I bring my drone? What filters might I need? Where else can I travel nearby?

Favourite photographers

John Weatherby, Nigel Danson, Nick Page.

Favourite tips

Ask questions, get to know other photographers. Take lots of pictures and hone your technique through trial and error. Don’t get frustrated; if you love photography enough, you will get better – it just won’t happen overnight.
