Three Canon EOS R users give their verdict

Armando Mazzeo

I decided to buy the Canon EOS R for its sensor that derives from the legendary EOS 5D Mark IV – a camera that has found its way into thousands of landscape photographers’ bags over the years. As it was Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera, I had doubts about how the EOS R would perform with EF-mount L-series lenses. To my amazement they work brilliantly on the EOS R using the EF-EOS R mount adapter.

Being very passionate about astrophotography, I needed a camera that works well during hours of darkness. I’m grateful for its ability to focus down to an impressive -6EV in low light and the remarkable recovery of shadow detail from its raw files. Other things to take into account are the curtain that protects the sensor from dust/dirt when swapping lenses, its ergonomic grip and the highly responsive touchscreen. My thoughts on this camera are mostly extremely positive. Although it’s almost five years old, it manages to acquit itself well and is a snip in my opinion when you consider it can be picked up for under £1,000 in good second-hand condition.

Following over ten years of loyalty to Nikon, I decided to change all my photography gear in early 2019 and embrace Canon’s ecosystem. I’ve always taken a liking to Canon’s colour science and quickly fell in love with the EOS R, especially the first RF lenses that were announced. The 30.3MP sensor is still one of the highest resolutions in the EOS R system to date and allows comfortable cropping in post-production.

When travelling, I mostly pair my EOS R with my RF 15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM or the RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM, two fantastic lenses that cover all the focal length I need.

Four years later, I still adore the camera and haven’t considered upgrading as it does exactly what I need. The missing feature that would have been welcomed is IBIS (In-body image stabilisation), but then again handshake at slow shutter speeds can be
