USED CAMERAS

SECOND-HAND CLASSIC

We return to where Canon started in full-frame mirrorless back in 2018, with the original EOS R

The EOS R will be long remembered as Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera. It arrived with four all-new RF-mount lenses and an EF-EOS R adapter that enabled EF-mount lenses to be used. Centred around a 30.3MP CMOS sensor with an ISO range expandable to 50-102,400, it can shoot bursts at up to 8fps and features Dual Pixel AF with 5,655 selectable positions, along with 4K video (with a 1.7x crop). There’s a 3.2in, 2.1m-dot fully articulated touchscreen and a 3.69m-dot OLED EVF. However, it lacks IBIS, an AF joystick, or dual card slots.

What we said

• ‘It’s like an EOS 6D Mark II in the way it feels like an entry point into full frame’

• ‘The introduction of a new customisable ring on RF-mount lenses is welcomed’

• ‘It’s built around a strong body that feels great in the hand over prolonged spells’

• ‘It’s encouraging that EF and third-party lenses perform so well with the EF-EOS R mount adapter’

How it fares today

The EOS R does start to feel a little dated when you start to compare it to Canon’s newer EOS R5 and R6 Mark II bodies. This is particularly true in terms of its button and control layout. Many enthusiasts are likely to feel lost without a multicontroller by their thumb to intuitively shift the AF point around the frame. This being said, the sensor and EVF still remain highly respectable today.

What to pay

The EOS R cost £2,349 with the EF-EOS R mount adapter when we reviewed it in 2018. Today you can pick one up in ‘good’ cosmetic condition for £920. Examples that are deemed to be in ‘excellent’ condition cost more and can be picked up for just under £1,000. You’ll need to spend close to £1,070 to buy
