Spotlight on readers’ excellent images and how they captured them

Buachaille Etive Mòr

1 Ihad photographed this location before but was never happy with the results. This time, the clouds picked up some colour from the rising sun and the water level produced some waterfalls. Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, 16-35mm, 2sec at f/11, ISO 100

Favourite subjects

I regard myself as a landscape photographer. I love nothing more than being outside with my camera capturing the scenes around me. I also enjoy the solitude of getting up early in the morning and travelling to locations for sunrise.

How did you get into photography?

My dad was a keen photographer, but it wasn’t until I started to travel that I felt the desire to document the places I had visited.

What do you love about photography?

It makes you more aware of your surroundings and gives you a way to capture the beauty around you.

Where do you find inspiration?

I read a lot of travel books and research areas online using Flickr and Instagram to find new places to visit.

What was your first camera?

Kodak Disc 4000 (giving away my age!)

Current kit

Canon EOS R5.

Favourite lens

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM.

Favourite accessory

My LEE Filters kit. I use a 6-stop or 10-stop ND filter for long exposures to create effects with moving water or clouds, and graduated ND filters to retain depth and detail.

Dream purchase

I would love the Canon RF 600mm F4 IS USM lens. I also enjoy wildlife photography and I feel this would get me closer to the action.

What software do you use for editing?

Lightroom, with occasional Photoshop.

Favourite photographers

I have to say Ansel Adams, given that I am primarily a landscape photographer. I also follow Thomas Heaton, Nick Page and Michael Shainblum on YouTube.

Favourite tips

First, don’t measure yourself against the images you see on social media. These are often the result of visiting the same location multiple times. And secondly, no one ever captured a great image by staying in bed.

About your pictures

My photography is greatly inspired by the Scottish landscape. I often get up early on the weekends and head to the Highlands for sunrise.
