D is for ‘Dead’?

What does the ‘D’ stand for in DSLR? Browsing the more recent editions of this magazine it would appear to be ‘Dead’. When I retired some years back I treated myself to the best camera on the market at the time – the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark ll – which took a good lump out of my pension. My fellow camera club members who by and large have all gone mirrorless can’t understand why I put up with the weight. I reply that the extra tonnage is all quality and this 17-year-old camera still produces the goods and is worth the heft. One fellow amateur who recently went mirrorless works out at the gym several days a week doing weight training – better he kept his old weighty DSLR and took some photos instead of paying gym fees.

I used to be a bit of a technophile and enjoyed reading reviews and tests in AP, but now, for me at least, everything has changed; nothing to support my dear-old SLR camera. Even this magazine has resorted to using four letter words such as Fuji and Sony. Technology appears to be driving photography out of any resemblance to the original concepts of the process. With AI creeping in, will the camera decide what to take instead of the photographer?

In the meantime I’m sticking where I am. I’m not going mirrorless at half the weight and twice the price. Or is that a lie? Maybe I have gone mirrorless – with a 12x16in pinhole. No mirror, no battery, no lens, but enough room inside to pack a picnic.

I see your strategy: Make your Canon DSLR feel lighter by buying an even bigger camera to go with it!

I particularly enjoyed your recent Art of B&W feature (AP 4 April). As someone who is still learning the craft, I found the insights and techniques shared in the piece to be incredibly helpful. It has inspired me to experiment more with this technique.

I would also like to commend you on the stunning images featured in your magazine. The work of your readers and contributors never fails to impress me, and it is a testament to the passion and dedication of the ph
