I travel regularly to London but must wake early to ensure minimal river traffic and ideal light, as well as a relatively calm river. Also, watching London wake up can produce more compelling shots. I never tire of shooting the capital.

Rob Padley – The Midlands

I first started making night photographs while living in the USA. As an outsider my eye was drawn to the quirky industrial and urban landscapes that surround San Francisco and I set myself a goal to photograph these unseen and overlooked areas. I developed my technique by taking road trips to neglected towns and photographing through the night while teaching myself the technicalities of traditional architecture photography. This was a lonely time for me, and my intention was to capture this feeling in the photographs.

Upon moving back to the UK in 2014 I continued taking photographs at night, focusing on the post-industrial towns of the Midlands, developing my style further, and working on a consistent theme to tie the photos together.

I’m drawn to empty streets in unusual areas such as industrial estates, devoid of life but still containing clues to human activity. I use the available ambient light and street lights to create a feeling of loneliness and isolation, while maintaining a sense of mystery and interest to the viewer through classic compositional practices and technical methods.

My goal for this series is to produce a set of images that invite scrutiny upon overlooked, neglected environments by using a consistent compositional theme. By highlighting the similarities of the locations, I wish to emphasise the differences. My favourite towns so far have been Stoke, Grimsby and Leicester. Next stop: Hull! For all these images I used a Canon EOS 6D with 45mm Canon TS-E lens.

The possibilities are endless here, with its mixture of old and new constructions and lots of brutalist buildings. I cannot explain why I like brutalism and abandoned, old buildings. And in this city, there is a mixture o
