Still life

It was good to see some still life in AP – Ienjoyed that. I’ve been taking photos of my family archive for future generations, to help them discover the meaning in the everyday things around the house as well as the precious memorabilia tucked away.

Here’s one that did well for an entry in the Trowbridge Camera Club competition this year. It’s called ‘Little Brown Jug’. The jug belonged to my mother who loved the music of the Glenn Miller Orchestra in the 1940s and pays tribute to the band leader who vanished over the English Channel in 1944.

The cost of travel

Oh dear, F Harvey clearly did not read my letter. It explained why the cost and difficulty of travelling into central London meant that I would be unlikely to ever plan to visit an art gallery in the capital. I was not arguing that ‘petrol is cheaper than rail fares’.

However, I do agree that ‘train ticket prices are often extortionate’, although in truth, ‘extortionate’ is an understatement. Transport companies do advertise ‘cheap fares’, but these are normally only available if you can book months in advance, and are always in very limited supply. A more typical train fare from my local station to London will be approximately £90 for ‘Off Peak’ and £210 for ‘Anytime’, according to the website.

Sadly for the planet, the cheapest and quickest way to travel from the Midlands to London is not by train, and it is not by car either. It is to travel by the most environmentally damaging option, i.e., a jet aircraft. A flight from Birmingham International to Heathrow is quick, cheap, and devastating
