1 Final Adjustments by Dawn Latcham A very sweet portrait, with good eye contact, and an expression which captures personality

2 Flying over the Bar by Brian Merry It’s not hard to see why this won an award – beautifully timed and excellently framed too

3 Patiently Waiting by Lisa Mason The lovely colours and beautifully blurred background help to create a bird portrait with impact

4 Watch the Love Birdies by Dave Norton A fun picture that creates a great narrative. Love the use of the cloud heart

When was the club founded?

1943. We are celebrating our 80th year.

What does your club offer new members?

We offer support to all new members to suit their abilities, from beginners to moreexperienced photographers. We have kept our fees low to help make it affordable and value for money. We hold appraisal nights for members to have work assessed by experienced members who will offer advice in readiness for them to enter their best work into internal and external competitions.

We also have field trips where members can go outdoors to learn and practise camera skills. This is followed through with support on printing and mounting images.

We also offer the loan of club equipment such as lighting, backdrops, stands, mount board cutters, pen pads, etc.

Describe a typical club meeting

We have a yearly programme with either a presentation speaker, an internal competition or a members’ night learning about Photoshop, studio and lighting set-ups, etc.

Do you invite guest speakers?

Yes, we have speakers local to South Wales who travel to the club and since 2020 when we purchased Zoom we had speakers from further afield, including from South Africa.

Do members compete in competitions?

Yes, we have six internal competitions a year and several external competitions against other Welsh Federation Clubs. Individuals can enter prints and DPIs into Welsh Salon, international contests and the PAGB to gain merits, awards and recognition for their work. Our club has won several trophies. The most recent was 1st place in the Three Valleys Battle. Also, several members have won top awards and gained letters after their names.
