LEICA has added two ultra-wideangle lenses to its SL system, theSuper-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14-24mm f/2.8 ASPH and the Super-APO-Summicron-SL 21mm f/2 ASPH. Primarily aimed at landscape, architecture, and astrophotography shooters, these new lenses will also fit L-mount cameras made by Panasonic and Sigma.

The 14-24mm lens marks the first time a focal length of 14mm has been available for the SL system. It boasts a constant aperture of f/2.8 across the zoom range and offers a very wide diagonal angle of view, of 114 degrees. To combat the distortion and aberrations associated with ultra-wide lenses, Leica says it has adopted an ‘elaborate’ optical construction, comprising 18 lens elements in 13 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses. Stray light is suppressed by multiple coatings on the glass surfaces and a fixed metal lens hood. The second release is the world’s first APO (apochromatic) lens with a 21mm focal length. It joins the current range of APO-Summicron-SL-lenses, which have 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 75mm and 90mm focal lengths. This new lens features 14 lens elements in 11 groups – 3 of them with an aspheric surface – and has a close focusing distance of only 21cm. It accepts 67mm diameter filters.

The Leica Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14-24mm f/2.8 ASPH is available to buy now for £2,220 while the Super-APO-Summicron-SL 21mm f/2 ASPH costs £4,700.

Sayonara to Canon’s EOS M camera range

WHEN Canon’s full-frame mirrorless EOS R system was announced with a new lens mount in October 2018, it seemed only a matter of time until the APS-C EOS M series was wound up. This now appears to be official, as all Canon EOS M cameras are marked as discontinued on Canon Japan’s website.

This includes the EOS M50 Mark II, the final model in the line-up to be released. In the UK, the EOS M50 Mark II and many of the system’s EF-M lenses are still available new if you search around for them, but presumably only until existing stocks run out. So if you use an EOS M camera and wish to add any of the lenses to your kit, now might be the time, especially if you prefer buying new. See store.canon.co.uk
