Photography in Milton Keynes is an enthusiastic and supportive group

1 Starship Robot by Angela Walkinshaw A popular subject that is classically Milton Keynes – placing the robot in the centre was an excellent choice
2 The Boy Marmaduke by Roger Bradbury Photographing Marmaduke in profile against the dark backdrop makes for a striking portrait
5 Bletchley Park Lancaster by Sue Hayward A classic scene, well framed
6 Platinum Jubilee Celebration by Matt Goodrum An image which tells a story without revealing too much

When was the club founded?

In June 2019 by Gill Prince.

How many members do you have?

I should probably explain that we’re not a traditional ‘club’, we are a Facebook Group, which I created for people who live and/or work in and around Milton Keynes. As such we have just over 1,500 members. I am the main admin for the group and I have a team of four brilliant moderators who help me run it, to ensure that members get the most from it.

How is your group different from a traditional club?

We don’t have weekly meetings or any of the formal structure of a traditional photography club. My aim was to give local people the ability to make contact with others who love Milton Keynes and also love taking photos – so when there is an amazing sunset, or a Lancaster due to fly over Bletchley Park, for example, we can make others aware, and then share our images afterwards. Though we do love seeing non-Milton Keynes shots as well, of course!

The idea was to build a community, so that members (and the admin team) could arrange meet-ups, swap ideas for shooting locations, hear about local events, and generally find others who have the same enthusiasm for our city, and for photography. Most importantly though we want people to share their images and to gain the support and advice they need in order to progress in their own photographic journey.

What do you offer new members?

Our group offers new members a space where they can share their work, and be encouraged, regardless of their current level or abilities. Many are very happy using phones and have no plans to change, while others have started to progress to getting their first cameras, with advice and support from our more experienced members.
