THE BEST FISH YOU’VE LANDED THIS WEEK

Justin’s top tip: If you don’t catch early on, don’t give up. In winter fish will often switch on as the light levels begin to change.

“UNFORTUNATELY I’D FORGOTTEN MY SCALES!”

“ON A RECENT trip to a Midlands stillwater I landed three good perch, all of which were probably over my 3lb 15oz personal best, but unfortunately I’d forgotten my scales!

“I did measure them at 50cm, 48cm and 46cm, and all were in great condition – the 50cm fish being particularly fat.

“Drop shot tactics using small creature baits from Fox Rage were successful, targeting areas near big shoals of baitfish. We’d caught nothing for the first part of the day, but at around 3pm the fish switched on. In fact these three perch came in consecutive casts!”

Liam’s top tip: When temperatures plummet, I find barbel like to hold up in snaggy areas. Target them in challenging conditions.

“I DECIDED TO CHANCE IT”

“THIS week I ventured on to my local council ticket on the River Severn. With the weather becoming rather cold, I didn’t feel confident – however, I kept an open mind. “The water coloured up after I arrived, so I decided to chance it and lowered in a small piece of meat by a tree, just on the crease, hoping there might be a barbel home. “I was rewarded with a quick bite, and to my surprise was greeted with a well-conditioned barbel, weighing 9lb 12oz. I was really pleased to catch it in such tough weather conditions!”

Max’s top tip: Pike are a great species to target over the coming months. Even when it’s freezing cold there’s always a chance of catching one or two.

“BIGGER THAN ANY MY DAD HAS CAUGHT!”

“IT WAS a cold day – perfect for pike fishing – so my dad, Ricky, and I headed to Pasture Wood Fishery in Lincolnshire.

“Targeting the Canal Pond, I floatfished a smelt, and within half-an-hour of fishing this pike took a liking to the bait!

“It was landed after a short battle and weighed 21lb 8oz – my new PB, and bigger than any pike my dad has caught!”
