Will 2024 be your time to shine?

IT LOOKS set to be another incredibly busy year for the big-match scene, with the list of major events that anglers can take part in seeming to keep on growing every 12 months!

It proves that there really has never been a better time to be a match angler and, although team fishing might be struggling a little, on the individual front there’s more than enough to fill your calendar whether you fish commercials, rivers or canals. Most of these competitions also offer a big enough prize pot to make the time and effort all extremely worthwhile.

Get in quick, though, because several competitions will begin their qualification processes in just a couple of months’ time. It may be possible to get a ticket closer to the match, but you certainly won’t have your pick if you leave it late!

There’s little to beat the buzz of National day, when teams from far and wide descend on a venue to put to good use what hours of practice have taught them.

This year’s Division One heads to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal around Wigan, while Division Two visits the mighty Aire & Calder and New Junction Canals in Yorkshire – these two waters also holding the Feeder National.

Entries are now being taken for all events, but your team members will need to be paid up Angling Trust members to fish. Email the Trust’s Competitions Co-ordinator Kelly Latimer at Kelly.Latimer@anglingtrust.net

If you love your river fishing in the summer, Evesham is the place for you! One of the longest-running events on the current scene, the festival weekend across Bank Holiday August is a true celebration of angling, with tackle stands, a beer tent and have-a-go-at-fishing schemes running alongside the three days of action on the Warks Avon. Saturday and Sunday host the individual finals, while Monday is rounded off with the team event. Qualification takes place via dozens of matches on the river from the start of the season in June. There are multiple places up for grabs – to book on, visit the Hampton Ferry website www.hamptonferry.co.uk, clicking on the Angling link.
