WHERE TO FISH EXTRA

Fancy going fishing but only have an hour or two to spare? Try one of these stretches, where you can cover plenty of water in that time, and boost your chances of a few New Year bites!

The Erewash Canal holds lots of pike and perch.

AIRE &CALDER CANAL, POLLINGTON, EAST YORKS

This deep canal is home to plenty of perch and pike that will keep you on your toes. Trying plenty of different areas is key, but exploring the depths is equally important. On some days the fish could be within striking distance of the bottom, while on others they could be comfortable at half depth.

RIVER BAIN, HORNCASTLE, LINCOLNSHIRE

This free-to-fish stretch holds a good head of roach in the 1lb-2lb bracket, but its fairly featureless nature means they rarely hold up in one spot. Fishing for short spells in each area will boost your chances of finding a specimen, with a light waggler or stick float being the best tactic on this slow flowing waterway.

Breadflake will pick out the bigger fish. Bait up fancied areas with nuggets of liquidised bread before trying them in rotation.

TRENT & MERSEY CANAL, RUGELEY, STAFFS

The Coors AC-controlled stretch is home to plenty of predators, with perch to 3lb and pike well into double figures on the cards. Head for the swims close to the Mossley Tavern and the big stripeys won’t be far away. Chuck close to any cover or moored boats with small rubber lures to tempt a response. The pike tend to follow the silvers, and if you spot fry scattering, there’s a good chance one of them was the cause of such panic!

RIVER WEY, FARNHAM, SURREY

Head for the stretch of this tiny waterway that runs through the town centre and you’ll be greeted by a venue that you can quite literally jump across in places.

It is home to plenty of chub, though, and hopping between swims with features is the key to finding them. Link-legered bread, cheesepaste or even prawns will work at this locally renowned free fishing hotspot.

EREWASH CANAL, ILKESTON, NOTTS

Both the Nottingham AA and Lower Beauvale AC stretches are home to a healthy head of pike, and perch nudging the 3lb mark. You could cover a mile of water in no time at all, having two or three casts in one spot before moving 50 metres and repeating the process. Keep rotating lure patterns until you land upon something that appears to be working on the day.

RIVER WENSUM, BILLINGFORD, NORFOLK

This feature-packed stretch of the waterway runs through the Billingford Lakes complex and is a banker for chub in the 3lb-5lb bracket, plus no shortage of pike to low doubles.
