THE BEST PIKE AND PERCH YOU’VE LANDED THIS WEEK

“UNTIL THIS, ALL I’D MANAGED WERE JACK PIKE”

“I’VE been fishing the Wharf Fishery in Cardiff for the past three seasons, targeting pike. I’ve heard of big ones caught from there, but all I’d managed were jacks, with the occasional larger fish making an appearance.

“Not to be deterred, I kept at it, getting out whenever I had a bit of free time. The other week my persistence finally paid off, when, during a night-time session, I had a subtle hit on the lure.

“The fish battled at close quarters, and when it surfaced, I couldn’t believe my eyes! It weighed 24lb and I was blown away. What a sense of achievement after all the effort.”

Darren’s top tip: Pike are well worth targeting at night as well as in the daytime, if allowed on your chosen venue.

“WE HEADED TO ASMALL ‘FORGOTTEN’ POND”

Anthony’s top tip: A change of venue can transform your session if your initial first-choice isn’t producing the goods, so always have a back-up in mind.

“THE OTHER day I spent a few hours hitting a few spots on the river that can hold fish. My mate, Matt, managed some perch on lures, but I didn’t have any joy.

“In a bid to change our fortunes, we headed to a small ‘forgotten’ pond that few people fish, but we both knew of, and what a choice it turned out to be! Matt soon hooked a pike and, as the light began to fail, the fish came alive, and we both hooked quality perch at the same time.

“They brought big smiles to our faces, knowing that there could be even bigger ones there too. It was a great end to a cold day!”

“I COULDN’T BELIEVE HOW STUNNING IT WAS!”

“THIS season I’ve been an out-and-out carp angler, but over winter I decided to try my hand at piking.

“Heading to my local Leeds & Liverpool Canal, my first few sessions came and went without any action. Feeling a little down, and considering giving up and going back to the carp, I decided to give the canal another try and boy, I’m glad I did.

“This 14-pounder nailed the lure on my second cast of the day. I couldn’t believe how stunning it was!”

Luke’s top tip: Don’t give up! Trying a new type of fishing can be tricky, but stick with it and the rewards will come.

“MY PATIENCE WAS REWARDED”

“I SIGNED off 2023 in style during a trip to a North Yorkshire canal. Perch were my target and I relied on lure tactics, a prototype Rapala pattern being my choice.

“The fishing was far from frantic, but my patience was eventually rewarded with a 3lb 1oz stripey – a great start. Things were about to get even better, as my second (and final!) bite of the day prod
