THE BEST FISH YOU’VE LANDED THIS WEEK

Nathan Horwood – 2lb 2oz grayling

“WITH the weather forecast looking grim, and me being unsure when my local river would next be fishable, I decided to head down to the Dorset Frome for a day hunting grayling.

“The river was slightly up and coloured due to rain through the night – not ideal for grayling, but I carried on.

“The plan was to look for deep glides where I could trot maggots. After losing a few good fish early on, I eventually landed a couple, the smaller being just over 1lb, the better one being this lovely 2lb 2oz fish.”

Nathan’s top tip: Try to find any pockets of deeper water when grayling fishing. They’ll often be held up in these areas.

Steve Tibbals – 25lb pike

“THE other day, while fishing a venue near Eastbourne in Sussex, I managed this pike of 25lb exactly on a legered smelt deadbait.

“After I struck into it, the fish fought like a slow-moving nodding lump that simply did not want to

Steve’s top tip: Travel light and keep on the move. Try to cover as much water as you can. The pike won’t come to you!”

come up off the bottom. “For most of the fight it stayed deep, and when I finally landed it, I had to negotiate a steep bank with somewhat shaky legs!”

“ON A cold morning I went for a couple of hours to a lake I visit occasionally, hoping for perch. “I fished a few areas before heading to a spot with a deep hole. These are great for predators, especially at this time of year.

“After making a few casts with my Texas-rigged bait, I hooked what I knew right away was a really big perch. And it was, measuring 50cm. While I didn’t weigh it, I’m sure it topped 4lb.”

Tiberiu’s top tip: Don’t fish too light when big perch are on the cards. I use a 10g-40g rated rod.

“THIS is the second PB pike my 11-year-old son, Max,
