WHERE TO FISH

It’s just like the old days at Worsbrough Res!

AN ICONIC venue has reopened following a major £2.4m revamp, and the initial sport has been nothing short of spectacular!

Worsbrough Reservoir, in South Yorkshire, was closed for most of 2023 for long-overdue bank restoration work, during which the water levels were lowered to make it possible.

Anglers were welcomed back last month and, in a bid to make sure that the fishing would be just as good if not better than before, over 2,400lb of carp and 1,000lb of silverfish were stocked during the shutdown.

The move certainly seems to have done the trick, with the first match after reopening resulting in the previous venue record being obliterated as Nick Askey banked an eye-opening 215lb 15oz haul of mirror and common carp. It wasn’t a fluke either, as second-placed Ben Emsley weighed in 189lb 4oz. Pleasure anglers have also reported busy sport from the venue, which is now right up there among the very best reservoirs around.

ROD-BENDING ACTION

Feeder fishing rules supreme at Worsbrough at this stage of the season, although the carp often shoal up a good distance from the bank.

England international Nick Speed is a big fan of the place, and he says that visitors are in for a real treat.

“I’ve always thought that Worsbrough was a brilliant fishery, but the action has stepped up to levels that we haven’t seen before,” he said. “Keeping things simple is the key to catching well, and I’d recommend fishing a Guru Hybrid feeder packed with dampened micro pellets and a bright Dynamite Baits Washter hookbait at range.

“It’s often a case of catching a few fish at one distance and then peeling a few metres off the line clip and going slightly beyond to relocate the shoal once they back away.”

Plenty of parking is available in the Worsbrough Mill pay and display car park, just off the A61, and flat paths and boardwalks make getting to your peg a doddle – although the use of a barrow is always a great help.

There’s also the Millers Tea Room café that serves everything from a warming cuppa through to a belly-busting full English breakfast!

TAKE NO CHANCES

Carp of all shapes and sizes are present, with plenty of ‘chunks’ in the 8lb-15lb bracket.
