STANGROUND BACKWATER, CAMBS

This arm off the River Nene in Peterborough is a haven in extra water for roach, bream and pike. The section parallel to Turnstone Way resembles a canal, with easy pole and waggler fishing. Contact: 07702 440892

ROCKLAND BOAT DYKE, NORFOLK

When winter arrives, fish pack into this narrow dyke from the nearby River Yare. Expect roach, perch, skimmers and a few pike. Contact: 01603 400757

COD BECK, THIRSK, NORTH YORKSHIRE

When the nearby River Swale is out of sorts, this tributary comes alive with chub and dace. The stick float is favoured by regulars. Contact: 01845 526110

FEEDER CANAL, BRISTOL, AVON

Linking the Bristol Avon to the docks, this section is popular when the river is unfishable. Bream, roach, dace and pike are the main targets, along with a few rogue chub.

The Riverside Park section has a dead arm below the lock running off the main river, a valuable hotspot when the Soar is in flood. Roach are common, along with perch, skimmers, the odd bream and chub.
