WHERE TO FISH

EVERY now and then a fishery will experience a stunning run of form, and Southend Farm is no exception to the rule.

The Essex complex has long been regarded as a gem by anglers in the region, but its reputation has spread wider since a jaw-dropping 1,300lb of roach and skimmers were banked in a recent match.

Just 16 anglers took part on the day, with winner Dave Wilmott having 122lb 5oz, and the last-placed angler weighing in 55lb! Nor was this a one-off, either, as 80lb-100lb hauls of skimmers soon followed it up. There are four lakes to go at, but it’s the 32-peg Match Lake that has been hitting the headlines recently.

While silvers have been dominant all winter, this lake is also home to a large head of carp ranging in size from 4lb to well over 20lb.

SILVERFISH HAVEN

The venue’s appeal goes beyond the quality of the fishing, with great facilities present to enhance the experience. A large café selling everything from full English breakfasts to a steaming cups of warming soup is on-site, while plenty of parking is available just a short stroll away from the swims.

Local expert Will Reynolds has fished the venue many times, and he’s not surprised by the current form. He told Angling Times: “The Match Lake is absolutely teeming with skimmers and, when it’s on form, there aren’t many places that can compete with this level of sport.

“Pole fishing is the best tactic to keep bites coming, for a couple of reasons. First, the neat and tidy presentation that it provides gains a better response, and it also keeps you away from the carp that tend to live in the middle when it’s cool.

“You’ll find at least 8ft of water on the long pole, and working between two or three swims during the day will keep bites coming from start to finish.”
