THE BEST FISH YOU’VE LANDED THIS WEEK

Jay’s top tip: Microwaving bread makes a tackier hookbait. Fifteen seconds is long enough.

“I TOOK A FEW SLICES OF BREAD FROM HOME”

“AS I HAD an afternoon spare I headed to my local water armed with a float rod and a few slices of bread from home.

“I settled into a swim and began fishing a rodlength out, feeding small amounts of groundbait plus a bit of liquidised bread.

“I make my hookbaits by microwaving slices of bread after removing the crusts. I then apply gentle pressure with a rolling pin and they’re ready to punch, giving me bread pellets that swell up superbly.

“After fishing for 40 minutes, the float began dancing, then disappeared. “I gave a firm strike and connected with a good fish. From the fight, I knew it was a chub or an ide, so when the latter broke surface I was delighted! It weighed 7lb 13oz.”

Casper’s top tip: I squeezed a little bit of Goo into my solid PVA bag of pellets to boost the attraction levels. Try it!

“IT WAS ALMOST UNSTOPPABLE!”

“I WAS fishing at Trent View Fisheries, near Nottingham when I had a drop-back bite, causing my bite alarm to sing. “I struck and connected with what was clearly a good fish – its power was unrivalled compared to anything I had hooked before.

“The fish seemed to be almost unstoppable, as it took line and had my rod bent double.

“After 15 minutes, I finally had this beautiful fully-scaled mirror in the net.

“The fish weighed 38lb and is a new PB! I’m only 14, so I was blown away by it.

“A coconut pop-up was the winning hookbait, which I presented in a solid bag filled with fishery pellets.”

“THE FLOAT SHOT UNDER AND I STRUCK”

“AT 3pm on Easter Monday the sky cleared, and I couldn’t resist popping down to my local canal.

“All my local tackle shops were closed, but I decided to dig a few worms up and give it a go. After about an hour I’d caught a roach and a perch. After that things slowed for an hour but then, just as I was about to move spots, the float shot under and I struck into something substantial. “I thought it might’ve been a carp, but to my surprise I pulled out this lovely tench! “It’s the biggest fish I’ve had from the canal since a pollution incident decimated the fish stocks a few years ago.”

Connor’s top tip: Worms are a great bait and are easily accessible. Dig them up yourself, or search for them by torchlight on damp nights.
Chris’ top tip: If you’re fishing multiple rods with different rigs, try switching them all over to the successful one
