Big bream round-up

“I’D NEVER SEEN ABREAM OF SUCH PROPORTIONS”

James’ top tip: As I was fishing in strong winds, I didn’t go beyond 40 yards. There’s no point in pushing it if you can’t cast and feed accurately.

“I RECENTLY had a 36-hour session after specimen bream on a 25-acre pit. After a slow first day, during which I had a solitary bream of 11lb 13oz, the following morning I had two takes almost simultaneously. “The first resulted in a 13lb 7oz fish – a good bream in its own right – but the other was much bigger and set a new PB at 15lb 10oz.

“That fish was incredible to witness. I’d never seen a bream of such proportions, and while I’ve had a few over 13lb, this one was a step up in terms of its impressive stature.

“I’ll be back out for them soon, hopefully catching something even bigger.”

“My tactic was to fish a spot at 40 yards using helicopter rigs with double pellet hookbaits. My 1.5lb test curve Drennan Twin Tip Duo rods were perfect for the job.”

“I WAS SOAKED TO THE BONE!”

“I HEADED down to a water where I’d had a good hit of bream in the past. I expected it to be packed, but found I had the place to myself!

“I just wanted to get a few bites, so quickly got the rods out with feeder-fished maggots, and fed small amounts of particles and maggots over the top.

Daniel’s top tip: You don’t need to feed loads on short sessions. Just a few handfuls is enough, then work the feeders.

“Right away I was rewarded with a fish of 14lb 4oz – what a start! The session then took a turn as I was battered by gale-force winds and pouring rain. In the midst of the storm, I landed another fish of 13lb 12oz and was absolutely soaked to the bone!

“Then the clouds vanished, the sun came out and, with the action having slowed, I was thinking about packing up when my indicator rose a few inches. “I struck into another good fish, and carefully played it in before landing this 15lb 12oz specimen!”

“MY FIRST ‘FOURTEEN’”
