Mixed media artist Cathy Nichols believes she owes her success to choosing art as a career instead of law

HOW I MAKE IT WORK

I began my artistic journey in my early thirties, when I threw away my law school applications and pledged my commitment to being an artist. To celebrate, I painted a very large canvas, Life Story, in acrylic, which became the centrepiece of my living room, narrating my transition into the art world in vibrant hues. I continued painting visual stories on canvas, almost like enlarged art diary pages, weaving my profound love for literature into each piece to express my view of the world.

Holding a master’s degree in Literature, I found a unique solace and narrative style in colours and stories, allowing me to communicate complex emotions through my paintings. Soon after pledging my commitment to the artistic life, I was accepted into a wonderful art co-op in Venice Beach, California called the Ten Women Gallery. This thriving gallery and community became a rich source of collected wisdom, camaraderie and a platform to share my work with art enthusiasts in the Los Angeles area.

As I moved to different areas of the US, my work blossomed into my signature style of vibrant florals and lively birds; a canvas representation of life’s vibrancy and seasons. While many artists have their unique styles, I believe my blend of story-inspired narratives, vibrant colours and commitment to teaching sets me apart. Plus, I can chat about colour for hours!

In my paintings, I aim to capture the sense that nothing is perfect in our lives, but there is always a way for joy and hope to emerge.
