DOUBLE WEAVE

BOURNE AND ALLEN'S ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL SAMPLE 1951 PHOTO CREDIT: SARA MORRIS

Hilary Bourne and Barbara Allen ran a successful textile studio, designing and making fabrics for exclusive retail outlets like Liberty’s, Fortnum & Mason and Heals. They were also commissioned to make curtains for the newly built Festival Hall in 1951 and costumes for the film, Ben-Hur, in 1959. Double Weave: Bourne and Allen’s Modernist Textiles, is an exhibition which shows some of their work, alongside that of two contemporary artists, Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings and Poppy Fuller Abbott, who have been inspired by and used techniques pioneered by Bourne and Allen. You can see this fascinating exhibition until 14 April 2024 at the Ditchling Museum of Art and Craft, of which Hilary Bourne was a co-founder.

SIR BEN KINGSLEY IN DALILAND

Spanish surrealist, Salvador Dali, is remembered as much for his flamboyant persona as for his extraordinary work. A new film, Daliland, starring award-winning actor, Sir Ben Kingsley, takes a look behind the glamour of his life in decadent 1970s New York. In his later years, Dali is revealed to be a fragile genius, haunted by the past and unprepared for how the world is changing around him. Daliland is in selected UK cinemas from 13th October, and on the Icon Film Channel, which can be downloaded as an app through Apple TV, Amazon Fire, Roki and Xbox.
