IN THE UK, THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF HISTORIC, stately homes brimming with all sorts of treasures which give us clues about those who resided there centuries ago – from the charmed lives of the landed gentry to the downstairs staff who served them.

But heritage homes that are open to the public are often home to spectacular art. Some houses might have ‘just’ one or two show-stopping paintings, while others might have dedicated art galleries or sculpture gardens.

From portraits of celebrity actresses to sketches by Rembrandt, here are some of the best artworks found in historic houses across the country.

Set in 120 acres of bucolic Capability Brown landscaped parkland, Compton Verney manages to be both steeped in history and a hub of contemporary creativity, boasting six permanent collections including those dedicated to folk art.

Major draws are surely portraits of Henry VIII by After Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) and Elizabeth I (about 1590 by an unknown artist). There’s a special sort of amazement in seeing such iconic images in real life, so to speak.

There are plenty of prints by Enid Marx (best known for designing the pattern for the seats on the London Underground trains in late 1930) perhaps the most charming of which is Watermelon, pumpkin and cucumber linocut from the 1950s. It’s small and unassuming but full of joy by a woman who had a truly prolific career.

Next spring, will see the opening of a sculpture park on |the grounds featuring contemporary pieces which are set to mark a communal ‘utopia’ for 21st century visitors by the likes of Sarah Lucas and Louise Bourgeois.

“Whether you’re after peace and tranquillity, or an uplifting creative experience – you’ll find it here,” says Compton Verney’s Director Geraldine Collinge. “Compton Verney is an extraordinary, unusual, creative experience that is celebrating its 20th year in 2024. It’s a place for the curious that inspires, delights, challenges and rejuvenates.”
