Roll up! 2023’s British Art Prize was a runaway success. Here are some highlights from the private view

EVERY YEAR, IT’S AN INCREDIBLE HONOUR that artists of all levels submit their artworks to us for the chance to win big in The British Art Prize. A major art competition with an international reach, this offers artists the opportunity to gain valuable exposure, kudos and recognition for their artwork.

A shortlist of 50 winners was selected by our esteemed judging panel, including Tom Croft of Portraits of NHS Heroes, internationally acclaimed portrait artist Jonathan Yeo, The One Show’sArtist in Residence, Adebanje Alade, renowned oil artist Sarah Graham, Adobe’s Vice President and MD, Suzanne Steel and Niki Browes, the editor of this magazine.

On the evening of 18th January 2024 – and despite the truly freezing temperatures outside – many of the award-winning artists, along with friends and supporters of Artists & Illustrators, gathered together to celebrate at the private view. The ceremony and exhibition took place at gallery@oxo situated on the Southbank.

Prizes were handed out to the first, second, third and People’s Choice winners, followed by speeches by each artist. For her painting Tiny Pieces, Lucy Pass won first prize. This earned her a £2,500 cash prize courtesy of The British Art Prize’s main sponsor, Adobe, plus a £500 Royal Talens gift voucher.
