MOVE OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

For many artists, standing by your work and talking to potential customers can be a daunting prospect. But think about it; you’re the very best person to sell it. You know all about the thought processes, the techniques used and where the inspiration came from. Plus, your passion will come through, and this is magnetic. It’s also good to take yourself out of your studio at times and into a new arena – and gain a new skill.

CHOOSE YOUR FAIR CAREFULLY

Before exhibiting, visit an admired fair if you can and see how it’s run and which artists are selling. If you’d like to chat to an artist about whether the fair is working for them, it’s best not to approach them at the event; after all, they are there to sell to customers. Take a card and send them an email afterwards.

CONSIDER THE LOCATION

Is it remote or in the centre of a prosperous town? Consider space for unloading and parking along with nearby hotels if you are staying away from home.

DIAL UP YOUR MINDSET

See taking part in a fair as a marketing exercise, with sales as an added benefit. Make sure you have a selection of your best work at different price points, including some standout pieces. Price each piece individually – don’t be tempted to list items and prices on one piece of paper. Try and envisage your stand from the customer’s point of view. Can they easily see everything? Do your best pieces have prominence on the stand?

CONSIDER BUYING HABITS

Make sure you have plenty of business cards along with a QR code link to your mailing list. Customers may not buy at the fair but purchase the next day, in several days
