JAN VAN HUYSUM, FRUIT AND FLOWERS IN FRONT OF A GARDEN VASE WITH AN OPIUM POPPY AND A ROW OF CYPRESSES, 1731-2, PRIVATE COLLECTION

Displayed publicly after a decade, this painting along with Flowers in a Vase with Crown Imperial and Apple Blossom at the Top and a Statue of Flora (1731-2) unveils Dutch painter Jan Van Huysum’s masterful still life compositions in Look closely – can you spot the butterfly? Rarely separated, these paintings – believed to be conceived as pendant pieces – epitomise his intricate artistry. Exceptionally preserved, they offer viewers a close look at Van Huysum’s meticulous brushwork, often as fine as a single hair. With vibrant colours and transparent layers, these two artworks underscore why Van Huysum was one of the most sought-after still life painters in 18th-century Netherlands. The show is on from 18 May to 8 September 2024. strawberryhillhouse.org.uk
