Laser Digital Multimeter CAT III – 600V 8801

LASER’S new model is a neat package that’s smaller and lighter than the Draper, at 140 x 75 x 30mm and 245g (against the Draper’s 390g), including the strong plastic case with built-in stand. It was quite capable of checking our four favoured modes (with DC volts up to 600V) and lots more besides.

The clear LCD display has a switchable backlight, although it faded after only five seconds, which could be a bind when working in darker conditions. The 650mm cables would be good for most tasks, but the 25mm shorter probes felt a touch low-rent. The continuity mode has a reasonable beep and the screen has a good data freeze. It’s a great meter for a DIY user, with a price that’s easy on the pocket.

SO many car problems are electrical these days that a multimeter has become an essential tool for the DIY enthusiast, and there’s a new kid on the block from Laser.

Our test is based on the most used functions for DIY-ers, measuring voltage (ideally both DC and AC), current and resistance, and checking continuity. We want to see a temperature probe plus auto ranging, where the meter selects the parameters automatically, making it simpler to use for the non-professional.

A case is useful, while a stand or hook is handy for workbench use. We looked for a clear, backlit display and a freeze function. Build quality was also assessed.

The well built, feature-rich Draper stays at the top of the tree, but the Laser is well worth a look for the occasional DIY user, performing well above its low price.

Still top dog Draper’s meter may cost more, but has lots of extra features

AS you’d expect at the price, the Draper is a more professional product with a higher spec and electrically rated at CAT IV rather than the Laser’s CAT III. The temperature probe is handy for car work and although not essential, auto ranging makes life easier.

The large LCD display is particularly clear with a backlight that stayed live for 15 seconds, more useful than the Laser’s five. We like its zip-up pouch and magnetic hanging strap, while the NCV detectio
