The new Volkswagen ID 2all concept previews a sub-£22,000 electric car set to go on sale in 2026 and showcases a major brand revamp that draws inspiration from Wolfsburg’s rich heritage and is intended to make it “shine again”.

The ID 2all features styling closer to the current Polo and Golf than the ID line-up of EVs – a design language that will now be applied to all future models.

This is part of a major refresh led by Volkswagen boss Thomas Schäfer to make it a “love brand” again.

Key to that is making a mass-market “affordable” EV that will be “as spacious as a Golf and as inexpensive as a Polo”.

When it goes on sale in 2026, the Peugeot e-208 rival will be one of the first EVs to use the Volkswagen Group’s long-awaited MEB Entry platform.

It will be joined by a new Volkswagen electric compact crossover, which will feature more rugged styling inspired by today’s T-Cross and T-Roc.

Volkswagen previously revealed an ID Life crossover concept intended to preview its first model on the MEB Entry platform, but that was scrapped by Schäfer soon after he took over in July last year.

New design boss Andreas Mindt led the fresh design of the concept, which remarkably took just six weeks.

Mindt joined from Bentley but had previously worked for Volkswagen, leading the exterior styling of the Mk7 Golf.

At 4050mm long, the ID 2all is slightly shorter than today’s Polo, although its 2600mm wheelbase is significantly longer, allowing for far greater interior space. The dimensions of the car were effectively fixed by the platform and Mindt had to work around them.

Unlike the rear-wheel-drive MEB platform used for the ID 3, the MEB Entry features a front-mounted 223bhp motor.

The decision to place the motor at the front was to free up space at the back, allowing for a 490-litre boot.

There will be a choice of 38kWh and 56kWh batteries, each using different cell technologies. The car offers a range of up to 280 miles with the larger pack, although the entry-level £22,000 model will feature the smaller one.

The ID 2all will be able to complete a 10-80% charge in around 20 minutes, handling rates of up to 120kW.

It has a top speed of 99mph and a 0-62mph sprint time of less than 7.0sec.

The ID 2all features design elements inspired by classic Volkswagen models including the Beetle and Scirocco, along with C-pillars intended to evoke the Mk1
