But it’s the latter we’re focusing on in our big ‘Discover’ travel feature this month and how adventuring under your own steam and leaving the car behind is incredibly physically and spiritually rewarding. Georgie Duckworth does a convincing job of sharing the joy of cycling the West Kernow Way in Cornwall on page 18. For myself, I’ve been lucky enough to test some e-bikes recently and this has revolutionised how I used my car during this period – ie, hardly ever. There is something incredibly liberating about not being shut in a hermetically sealed interior as I journeyed to nearby nature reserves, wild places and even supermarkets. Oh, and pubs. Britain’s safe cycling network is growing steadily each year and offers an inspiring alternative array of off-road routes to enjoy.

Of course, heading out on foot is still my favourite way to explore and this issue is, as ever, full of excellent advice for walks (page 91) and what to see on them – from Nicola Chester’s masterpiece on foxgloves (page 30) to our beautiful celebration of dragonflies, damselflies and demoiselles on page 40. So revel in the countryside this June, whether on two legs or two wheels.
