It can also save you money in the long run, through raising strong healthy seedlings by thinning out and planting at the right time and propagating perennials to extend the number or range of plants in the ground or in pots. Plus, the more you hone your basic gardening repertoire, the better prepared you are to experiment and explore exciting garden plans and designs.

1 Locate a clumping plant that is sufficiently big enough to divide. Use a sharp spade to dig up from the ground, being careful to remove the whole rootstock.
2 Use the spade to cleanly cut the clump into several parts, ensuring that each portion has a good supply of roots and some upper-plant growth.
3 Trim upper plant growth, such as leaf and flower stalks, by using a pair of secateurs. This will prepare the plant for new growth once it is bedded in.
