With just three months to go before King Charles III’s Coronation, preparations are well under way. With Prince William, his wife Kate and their children, George, Charlotte and Louis, all set to play prominent roles at the historic event on 6 May, the monarch is said to be “desperate” for his youngest son Harry and his wife Meghan to attend the three-day spectacular, amid the fallout of Harry’s memoir and accompanying media interviews.

There are reports that Charles could have his say on Harry’s allegations in a pre-Coronation interview, possibly with the BBC. “It is not the done thing to avoid subjects in interviews, so it makes matters tricky,” a source said. “Even one small comment on Harry and Meghan would make worldwide news. It could also prompt a response from Harry, which could be unpredictable. Everything is very delicate.”

The King, 74, is reported to have asked the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, who will officiate the ceremony, to “broker a deal” to ensure Harry and Meghan’s attendance, amid reports that he believes their absence would be an even bigger distraction to his big day.

However, Harry’s elder brother William has reservations about his sibling’s presence and fears that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could take the King’s Coronation as a media opportunity to “pull a stunt”.

“The issue of substance is whether they attend the Coronation and if they do, under what terms and conditions. William fears that unless Harry’s visit is tightly scripted, he could steal the limelight by, for example, going on a walkabout in a deprived London borough with Meghan,” an insider said. “The family is split, and all the indications are that Harry is being advised to agree to nothing at this stage and ‘play it long’, right up to the last minute, which is making negotiations with him difficult.”

“This is the day that Harry’s father has been waiting his entire life for,” Bella’s royal expert Duncan Larcombe tells us. “The primary issue that William has is, what does he do when confronted by his brother? William’s fury is because Harry has broken his trust, which means that William can’t have a single conversation with his brother about anything ever again for fear that it will be shared and made public, unless he’s prepared for that.”
