From breathtaking beaches to rugged mountains, here’s how to enjoy this hidden gem

Kotor’s old town is stunning

Why go

The picturesque Bay of Kotor

With its majestic mountains, gleaming lakes, breathtaking beaches and charming towns, Montenegro is an invigorating getaway. Despite being one of the smallest countries in Europe, it is unquestionably mighty (and cheaper than nearby Croatia!)

Counting Serbia, Croatia and Albania as neighbours, you can fly to Montenegro from all major UK airports in just under three hours. Living up to its age-old Black Mountain nickname, the tiny Balkan country is made up of 80 per cent mountains and is offset with 117 beaches, five national parks and the oldest olive tree in the world.

The best time of year to visit is from May to October although do be aware that it does get very hot in July and August.

You will be surprised how much this country has to offer, from hiking, biking in the Montenegrin mountains to wild river rapids and cascading waterfalls. If you prefer a slower pace whilst on holiday you may want to take in the beautiful scenery on a road trip. Hopping between the various destinations throws up a surprising mix of history-drenched old towns like the UNESCO-listed Kotor and livelier cities with cafés, museums and galleries.

What to do

The cable car is a great way to take in the views

At just 25 miles long and ten miles wide, the beauty of Montenegro is how easy it is to see everything on your bucket list. We recommend taking the Kotor cable car to Lovcen National Park, which opened in August 2023 and involves plenty of mesmerising views of Montenegro’s mountainscape. Climbing 1,348 meters in just 11 minutes, the excursion is surprisingly peaceful. At the top, you’ll find friendly bars, restaurants and spots to soak in that dreamy view.

For historic architecture galore, take a wander around the old town of Budva, also known for its gorgeous beaches and lively nightlife. We loved the cobbled streets, quaint boutiques and museums aplenty, which make it perfect for a day trip.

The rather elegant Cetinje is the previous royal capital of Montenegro and is home to a dedicated museum to King Nicholas. Only one-storey houses are allowed in the city and it’s definitely worth a visit to explore all of the country’s rich heritage. The city is almost 700 metres above sea level meaning summer temperatures are a lot more pleasant than the hot spots across the coast, as Montenegro reaches highs of 31°C in high summer.

Lake Skadar – shared with neighbouring country Albania – is the largest lake in south Europe and is surrounded by natural beauty. Birds to spot during a very scenic boat tour – costing 40 euros per person for an hour – include the Great Pelican, Camarons, Kingfishes and Egrets.
