Boasting hidden gems and various cultural influences, the island of Menorca has more to offer than you might think…

Why go?

Often overlooked by those heading to its buzzy neighbouring Balearics, Menorca is Ibiza and Mallorca quieter, more laid-back sister. From beautiful, bountiful beaches to Mediterranean cuisine and glorious sunshine, Menorca ticks off all the boxes for a perfect getaway – with f light times from the UK as little as two hours.

Due to many invasions over the centuries, Menorca is steeped in history and has been inf luenced by various cultures, including the Roman Empire, the Moors, the Spanish and the British.

But despite its conquerors, Menorca has its own unique attributes that distinguish it from its Balearic counterparts and the Spanish mainland. And the climate is one of them. While the weather is typically Mediterranean, a gentle breeze keeps visitors from sweltering in the summer. From September to May, the countryside resembles the rich greenery of the UK, making it a home away from home for many Brits.

Wine and dine

Menorca’s luscious grounds also provide a fertile soil for produce, which makes for delightful wine. Menorcan red is typically made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, while whites are usually a light Chardonnay. Give it a try at the winery tour and tasting at Binifadet bodega and there’s an exquisite restaurant on-site nestled in the vineyards.

Wine isn’t the only tipple enjoyed on the island, and British inf luence remains today in the form of gin. Even if you’re not a fan, you must sample pomada, a refreshing mix of gin and lemonade.

Menorca is a foodie’s heaven. Many restaurants are family-run, and menus are packed with Spanish staples. Beachside restaurant Ca’n Santi in Punta Prima has an extensive list of local favourites, including paella. Another Menorcan staple is cheese, which has been long been produced on the island. Although now made using modern techniques, you can step back in time and learn how the much-loved food used to be produced at Binissues Manor House and Farm.
