As part of an effort to boost school attendance following the pandemic, parents in England will be facing increased fines for taking their children away without permission.

Parents should not be blamed for taking a short amount of time off during term time when the cost of travel sky-rockets in the holidays. With fares sometimes doubled in the school break, coupled with overcrowded destinations and airport chaos, stringent rules are spoiling the magic of travel for our kids.

As a travel blogger, showing my kids the world has been so joyful. The effects of travelling can be seen from a young age, with children growing confident in social situations, and adaptable to different settings and environments. All while embracing that real feeling of freedom we don’t often get as an adult.

As well as exposing young minds to different cultures and foods, travel is inspirational, giving tangible lessons on everything from animals in the wild to real space rockets and ancient history.

We now live in a digital, often-indoor world with parents and children alike focused on their different screens. Travel opens the door to shared experiences as a family as well as hands-on learning in the real world and quality time spent outdoors. Yes, these lessons could be taught in the school holidays, but inflated prices in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis are making it impossible for some families to travel.

School is the priority, but life lessons are just as important. Fining parents for a short amount of time off is inflexible and unreasonable.
