GMB star Kate Garraway has revealed all ahead of final documentary

Kate Garraway has emotionally opened up about the real reason she’s releasing another documentary about her late husband’s battle with Covid.

The TV star sadly lost her partner Derek Draper in January following a cardiac arrest in December. The psychotherapist was only 56 years old but had been battling the devastating consequences of contracting Covid since 2020. When he died the family were in the process of filming the third documentary about Derek’s condition, having previously picked up a National Television Awards for her moving films Finding Derek and Caring For Derek.

The third instalment of the trilogy, Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story arrives on ITV this week. But speaking ahead of the heartbreaking documentary’s launch, Kate, 56, revealed that she “hadn’t planned to make another one”. The idea had been all Derek’s.

“At the beginning of January 2023, he’d been released from a four-month spell in hospital for sepsis and we were very positive about his recovery,” she recalled. “Derek was determined to keep on getting better and improving. One day, we were sitting together while I was caring for him and he suddenly, from nowhere,

asked, ‘Are we making another documentary?’

“I said, ‘Well, if we do, I think we should work on it together and it should be your story, told in your voice.’ Derek got very emotional at the idea, because his words and speech were so limited… I asked Derek, ‘What would be your main message?’ And he said, ‘Never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love.’
