Is having a cleaner lazy?

My husband and dad are my two favourite men. But they are closely followed by Saleem, my cleaner, who I adore and honestly don’t know what I’d do without.

He comes for two hours every three weeks and leaves our two-bedroom f lat looking like a hotel. The man is worth every single penny.

I find it crazy that anyone would suggest having a cleaner is lazy. Having a cleaner when you work full-time (and my husband, Matt, works shifts), is far from lazy – it’s practical and gives me a healthy work-life balance. Plus it’s a smart choice for couples.

Matt and I are often like ships in the night so the time we do have off together is precious. We want to go for a nice walk, watch the football and eat pizza – not argue about whose turn it is to clean the bathroom.

Yes, we’re in a cost-of-living crisis, we’re all feeling the pinch and I know having a cleaner is a luxury. But I’d rather cut costs elsewhere – turn down drinks or not buy the dress I’ve had my eye on – than not have Saleem come and work his magic.

Plus, by hiring a cleaner, you’re also contributing to the local economy and supporting small businesses or independent contractors who rely on cleaning services as their livelihood – and in this current climate, that’s really not a bad thing.

Far from being lazy, having a cleaner is a strategic choice that allows Matt and I to prioritise our time and reduce stress and arguments.

“Don’t worry, the cleaner will do that!” my friend said, gesturing to the dirty plates piled up in the sink. I didn’t get it; she had a dishwasher, it would only take a few minutes to sort out. Lazy is the word that sprang to mind.
