Richard Madeley makes a shock revelation about wife of 38 years

Exclusive

Judy hasn’t made a return to broadcasting

Richard Madeley has claimed that his wife Judy Finnigan is “happy to call it a day” in a shock confession. The TV star, who has been married to Judy for 38 years, also revealed that the couple now often sleep in separate bedrooms.

The revelation came as Richard, 68, sat down with fans to give a talk on his latest novel. But chat quickly turned to his marriage and whether or not the golden TV couple would ever co-host a show together again. “We did 13 years on This Morning, which is a heck of a long time – seven years in Liverpool, six years in London. And then Channel 4 poached us so we did eight years of Richard & Judy on Channel 4. That was a total of 21 years, which was more than enough.

“We were sort of pleased actually,” he said. “Although for my money, Judy was the best presenter I’ve ever worked with – I think she was gifted as a journalist and TV presenter – she never really enjoyed it that much.

“The actual moment, the broadcasting she did, but all the stuff that goes with it, especially for women on telly, she found it a lot of baggage to carry. And that’s why she hasn’t come back into it. She’s very happy to call it a day and allow me to do my thing.”

After Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes’ shock divorce announcement last month, Richard and Judy are now one of the the only original daytime TV couples remaining. But while Richard is a regular on Good Morning Britain, Judy, 76, has shunned the spotlight since her final appearance as a Loose Women panellist in 2015.

Both of them, however, have gone on to become successful authors, with Judy remaining Richard’s biggest critic. The star even admitted that his wife has only just read his latest book, and took to WhatsApp to let him know her thoughts as they were sleeping in separate bedrooms.

“She’s now got it by her bedside,” he said of his latest novel. “She has read the first two chapters, and she did actually WhatsApp me because I’d gone to bed very early to do GMB and when I do that I sleep in the spare bed. She sent me a message that I read in the morning to basically say that she loved it. She really loved it. So that was good.”

In another shock twist, Richard also revealed that he might soon take a step back from his TV hosting duties, telling us, “I’m a reporter at heart. I love breaking news – it’s one of the reasons I do GMB, there’s nothing better. Breaking news is catnip to me, I still get a huge buzz out of it.
