Here We Go

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH best

Legendary actress Alison Steadman is back on our screens with the second series of sitcom, Here We Go, which follows the Jessop family, including her character –mum Sue. This time, Sue is downsizing and having a big clearout, while the rest of the gang, including her son Paul, are up to their usual antics. Here, Alison, 77, fills us in on what’s in store and how she and the cast are so close.

Hi, Alison. What did you love about being able to play Sue again?

I love Sue! She can be a pain in the neck, but she’s got such a warmth about her. And she’s got a nice mix. She’s not just a lovely granny, or a kind mum – she’s a bit of a nutter and it’s nice to play nutters.

There’s some sweet scenes this time around between her and her son, Paul…

I love the relationship between the two of them. They have their moments but, when it comes down to it, they just genuinely love each other. He would do anything for his mum, and she’d do anything for him. But it’s not sentimental, you believe it.

Do you have any similarities with Sue, do you think?

I don’t think Sue has got much of me in her except we’re both from Liverpool. But I love the family link because I love my family and I’m happiest when we’re all together. Sue’s like that, she loves being with family and just popping round there and sitting on the couch.

Do the rest of the cast feel like a real family behind-the-scenes?

Absolutely. There’s a lovely atmosphere when we’re filming. Everyone is really enjoying every day and we all get on so well. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it because we love the scripts and we love each other.
