Welcome to Untrending! As part of my lifelong commitment to avoiding doing either the washing-up or Couch to 5k, I’ll be selflessly immersing myself in the mindless, scrolling maelstrom of trends, fads and obsessions on the internet just for you lovely bestmagazine readers. Why? To try to answer The Biggest Question of the 21st century: What on earth is everyone talking about?

Trends are meant to make us stand out in a crowd but if Instagram has revealed anything true about the world it’s that, trendy or not, we’re all living identikit lives. I’ll be writing this from my sofa because I’m 47 and a generous size 16 with two kids and a full-time job. My adventuring days are behind me. Someone whose real job was called ‘trend forecaster’ once said to me that ‘trends only happen because cool people get bored’. I see what she means. Pure fashion trends, especially, are brilliantly silly, so let’s start there. Pens at the ready!
