When Denise Welch takes to the stage on the first night of her new play, The Gap, in February, her hubby, artist Lincoln Townley, will, no doubt, be leading the applause – and will be the first to raise a glass to his wife – but the drinks will be strictly non-alcoholic.

Both former hell-raisers, Lincoln and Denise have both been in recovery for almost 12 years now – and, clean and sober, are going from strength to strength in both their personal and professional lives after battling demons that could have destroyed them both.

Denise and Lincoln met in a nightclub in 2011 and it was the start of a tempestuous relationship with drink and drugs binges. Denise had begun using cocaine in her late 30s as a form of self-medication against depression, but it led her down a dangerous path. ‘I did cocaine and it made me feel normal for two hours and that was a descent into that world, then it became hell,’ she said.

‘I was dealing with 14-hour schedules while suffering depression and that was my descent into alcoholism and drug use.’
