Harry, William & a sick King

As King Charles made the shocking announcement that he has cancer, Prince Harry rushed to his father’s side… but the initial reunion did not include his brother William…

Harry and William are not thought to be in contact
King Charles’ cancer diagnosis has caused widespread shock

When King Charles discovered he had been diagnosed with cancer – one of his first actions was to pick up the phone and personally break the news to his three siblings, Anne, Andrew and Edward and of course, his two sons, William and Harry, the latter who he had not seen since the Coronation last May

For Prince Harry, thousands of miles away in Montecito, California, it must have been an emotional moment, charged with complexity due to the complicated turn the relationship between father and son has taken in the last few years.

Since Harry’s 2020 departure for America with his wife Meghan, dubbed ‘Megxit’, the television interviews and the publication of his tell-all memoir Spare, Harry’s relationship with his family has been – as it would be with any family – under considerable strain.

None of us can choose our relatives but, as Katie Piper said on Loose Women: ‘We all have that controversial, inappropriate (elderly) relative, we would all rather mute sometimes but you just let it go. I would never judge another family. We don’t know what has gone on privately… but I would have to think very carefully to let that person have access to me or my kids.’

Kelly Holmes added: ‘The King has cancer. It is their family. Let’s give them a break and let it be.’

Despite his past actions, Harry’s reaction spoke volumes. He rushed straight to the airport in LA and boarded a plane that would bring him to the UK to join his father as he embarks on treatment. However, his visit was a brief one, and a day later he was back on a plane to America, having not seen his brother William.

Harry was a guest at the lavish Coronation ceremony last year, but he is not believed to have been invited to join the family on the balcony. In fact, he returned to LA almost straight afterwards and, if he did indeed spend any private time with his father, it must have been a brief encounter.

For Charles, now
