Most little girls dream of being in love and much has been written about Hollywood superstar Jennifer Lopez’s turbulent love life since she sprang to fame in the Nineties. After tying the knot and getting divorced three times, ‘Jenny from the block’ is now re-telling her relationship history in a musical film. Now reunited and married to actor Ben Affleck – almost 20 years after calling off their engagement – the 54-year-old says she’s found her ‘forever person’ and has put the record straight on her romantic past by releasing This is Me… Now:ALove Story, inspired by her recent album. Here, the mum of 15-year-old twins Max and Emma (with exhusband Marc Anthony), tells best about her most personal project to date…
Hi Jennifer. How did the idea for This is Me… Now: A Love Story come about?
Ben and I got back together. We were so happy and in love and couldn’t believe that we were getting this second chance that neither one of us thought we would ever get. And it inspired me to go in and make music again. When it was done, I thought to myself: ‘There’s more to this story – there’s something bigger I want to do with this music.’
How would you describe it?
At the heart of it, it’s about a person trying to figure out what love is and how to get there. It’s about the actual idea of love. Some things do last forever, and I wanted to put that message out into the world. Then I realised that wasn’t the whole story, because it’s like, ‘Oh yay, great, true love lasts —but it’s not that simple? ’ It’s a windy, crooked, sometimes dark road to get to a place where we can really feel comfortable and love ourselves enough to be able to open ourselves up to have something healthy and good in our lives. So it is a love story, but not in the conventional sense. It’s about learning to love yourself.
Has that been your experience?
As a hopeless romantic, I had wondered my whole life, ‘Does true love exist?’ I’ve gotten my heart broken. I’ve been through three divorces. I’m trying over and over again, and it doesn’t seem to be working out. I realised that I actually do believe that true love does exist – but there was this journey of the 20 years in between that led me back to that place.
