Production started last year – and no one wanted the ending that the star is now hauntingly having to face.
Derek lost his ongoing battle with long Covid in January. He was just 56 – by then, the former political advisor’s health battles (which began with his Coronavirus diagnosis in March 2020) had been followed intently by the nation.
When he first went into hospital, Derek was put on a ventilator and placed in an induced coma for weeks. It was a year before the dad-of-two was able to leave hospital and return to his London home but he needed round-the-clock care…
In the Summer of 2022, Derek was taken to hospital with sepsis – but thankfully pulled through.
Then in early December 2023, he had a heart attack – and was again taken to the hospital.
The new ITV documentary follows the award-winning -Finding Derek and Caring for Derek.
The couple began filming last May, with hopes it would provide an insight into his personal struggles – helping others in the UK with the same problems.
Called Derek’s Story, it will reflect on his life before Covid, including his high-profile political career, as well his relationship with Kate, their early years together – and how Derek’s illness changed the nature of their dynamic.
